When you book a hunt with Ameri-Cana Expeditions to go hunting in Spain, it is more than just a hunting trip; it is an experience, from the moment you arrive at the airport in Madrid, until you depart. The hunting trips are tailor made to your needs: we work 90% for the American market and the rest for the European. You are met at the airport on arrival by the outfitter himself, or by a company representative. All official paper work needed for importing your firearms, are ready before your arrival, as well as all hunting licenses, permits and insurance, which in Spain is mandatory.
Your first night in Spain will be spent in a hotel in Madrid, which will be booked by us in advance, to help you to rescover from the trip. Later in the day, we will show you around Madrid, before you join us for a traditional Spanish meal. The next morning you will be driven to our ranch in the vicinity of the imperial city of Toledo, or towards the camp or hotel designated for the beginning of your hunt. You will be guided and escorted by someone form our outfitter's office, during the entire length of your stay in Spain.
Parallel programs for the non hunting companion
Your non-hunting companion is very important too. Therefore we have special programs for her/him while you are hunting. Shopping for leather goods, jewelry, pottery and many handcrafted products, are at her/his fingertips to enjoy. The history and culture, which is surrounding our lodge, is truly magnificent.
We want to share it with the non-hunter and with you, without interfering in the hunting program, and if you are interested in the cultural side of this trip, getting to know about it, will make your stay doubly worthwhile. The outfitter's wife Paloma, in accordance with the ladies interests and desire, conducts all this parallels programs, we call HUNTOUR.
And now let us give you a brief description of Spain’s big game species:
Red Deer The Spanish Stag or Red Deer (Cervus elaphus hispanicus) exclusive to Spain is the classical trophy of our Sierras. It is a little smaller than the Red Deer of Central Europe (cervus elaphus hipelaphus), but its antlers usually have more points. A good trophy should have at least 14 points and main stems 80 cm. (30 inches) long. There are about 200,000 Red Deer in Spain and about 25,000 are taken annually by hunters, most of them during the drives.
Ibex
The Spanish IBEX, found only in Spain, and is certainly Europe's most special trophy.
Spanish IBEX, Gredos Type (Capra hispanica Victoriae), with the typical lyra form with a strong growing curve.There are about 25,000 animals in the Gredos Mountains, and a good trophy should be of 9 or more years of age with a horn length of 25 inches or more.
Spanish IBEX, Beceite Type (Capra hispanica Maritimus), with horns adopting a more straight and vertical growing curve. There are 8,000 animals in the Beceite area.
Spanish IBEX, Almijara Type (Capra hispanica Penibeticus), with their horns resembling the configurations of Mouflons, with a strong curve growing aggresively backwards from the skull.
Spanish IBEX, Ronda Type (Capra hispanica Meridionalis), which is the smallest of the four. The growing of the horns is flat and with a small angle.
Fallow Deer
The Fallow Deer (Dama dama dama) was introduced from the Middle East, where it was confined since the glacier ages, to Europe by the Romans over 2,000 years ago. Its habitat is the wide-open spaces of our Sierras. This graceful spotted animal makes a spectacularly beautiful trophy.
Chamois
The Pyrenean Chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra pyrenaica) and the Cantabrian Chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra parva) live in the Pyrenees and the Cantabrian Mountains, respectively. Both subspecies have hook-shaped horns and are a challenge for sportsmen who love mountain hunting. The Pyrenean variety number about 20,000 and is larger than the Cantabrian subspecies, of which there are about 12,000 animals.
Mouflon Sheep
The European Mouflon (Ovis musimon) was introduced from the islands of Corsica and Sardinia, confined there since the glacier ages, to continental Europe in the 17th century and has firmly re-established itself in our sierras. It is a quick-moving and intelligent animal with highly developed instincts, which makes it difficult to hunt as any wild sheep is expected to be.
Roe Deer
The Roe Deer (Capreolus capreolus), the ghost of the forest and the most numerous hunted species in Europe, has curiously pearled antlers with six points. Spain has a substantial population of roe deer and yields very good trophies.
Wild Boar
The Wild Boar (Sus scrofa) is the favorite hunting trophy for many Spaniards. It is also the most sought after animal in the Monterias, Spain's traditional hunting technique. Wild boar are specially numerous in the thick undergrowth characteristic of our sierras. When wounded, the razor sharp tusks of a wild boar become weapons capable of killing the fiercest dog or reckless hunter. It is legal in Spain to hunt them at night and it is usually hunted during the full moon.

Our outfitter has the privilege of hunting exclusively, in some of the highest trophy quality, privately owned areas in Spain, as well as having access to all the State hunting reserves. Before sun rise, you will be driven daily 45 to 90 minutes, to one of the surrounding areas of our lodge, where you will hunt. Sometimes you come back to the lodge for lunch and return for the evening outing.
We use 4x4 vehicles inside these areas to get to the game, there, we hunt on foot and from high seats, if needed. The terrain in these areas is normally rolling hills with strong cover and open meadows. While hunting out of the State hunting reserves, normally high mountain ranges, you will stay at local hotels, or Paradores if available and you will be taken hunting by your guide and game warden, for the day.
In some areas we also use horses to get you up into the mountains. All trophies taken are properly skinned in the fields and, within the next 24 hours, delivered to a local taxidermist, who will take care of the professional skinning, salting, crating and handling of it.
Hunting provides an opportunity for very close contact with the natural enviroment of which Spain has some of the most unspoilt when compared with the rest of Europe. Finally, the extensive hotel facilities and the state-run Paradores in Spain are guarantees to the tourist of a really confortable stay while engaged in hunting.
